Semi-solid processing is a technique for producing near-net shape components for high performance applications from aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys. It is an emerging technology that allows for the production of high-integrity castings with die casting machines Semi-solid metal is done at a temperature that puts the metal between its liquid and solid temperature.
Its deformation resistance is smaller than that under solid state, so that high performance forming part of complicate shape, high intensity and good precision can be processed once at large deformation .In China it was the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Science has firstly launched out into research on metal semi-solid forming technology at the end of 1970s. Many scientific research institutes, universities and colleges made more extensive research on it after 1990s, but mostly based on theoretical research and at the experimental stage.
