Who is Tuye(The Moon Rabbit)?
Tuye(The Moon Rabbit) is a clay figurine which comes from a beautiful folklore in old Beijing:
Long ago, a great plague attached Beijing, doctors and medication proved useless; people were dying in frightening numbers. The terrified populace appealed to Chang'e the lord of the moon (or Moon lady), by burning incense.
Chang'e sent Moon Rabbit to Beijing city for rescue. Moon rabbit delivered medicine to the afflicted people. Soon, Beijing city survived from this disaster. The grateful Beijingers gave many titles to Moon Rabbit to show their gratitude, the most popular one is Tuye.The Moon Rabbit still lives on the moon; his silhouette can be seen on clear nights, pounding medicine in a celestial mortar and pestle, praying for the good fortune of the people. |
